She launched into a speech about how Laura had abandoned me.
“Never mind,” I cut her off. “I’ll figure it out.”

Fifteen minutes later, a key turned in my front door.
Mom entered.
She launched into a speech
I’d given her that spare years ago.
She took the mop.
“Sit down. Somebody has to look after you now.”
“Mom, I was only asking…”
“I know, sweetheart. It’s awful, being abandoned like this.”
The mop.
“She didn’t abandon me.”
Mom plunged the mop into the bucket.
“Don’t worry. I’m handling things.”
My shoulders dropped. For a moment, I didn’t have to think.
“I’ve spoken to a divorce lawyer,” she said.
“She didn’t abandon me.”
“You should book a consultation,” she continued. “With the baby coming, we need to discuss custody before Laura starts making decisions.”
“What? Laura hasn’t even given birth, and divorce?”
“You have to protect yourself. That video shows what she’s capable of.”
