Laura looked at me.
I raised my eyebrows and gave the slightest shake of my head.
“Hmmph.”
She knew what my look meant: Let it go. Please. For me.
So, she smiled at Mom.
“Let me fetch the cake while we still have room for dessert.”
Laura rose, pausing briefly to check her phone on the sideboard.
She returned moments later with the cake.
She knew what my look meant
“Just for you,” Laura said.
She cut a slice of cake and served it to Mom.
Mom took a bite. Her eyes widened.
“You got lucky, dear. This tastes wonderful!”
Mom finished a huge slice, scraped up the frosting, and asked for another.
“Just for you,”
“This is the best thing I’ve eaten all year,” she said.
At the door, she pressed Laura for the recipe.
“It’s a secret,” Laura answered.

Afterward, I wrapped my arms around her while she rinsed the roasting pan.
