A Woman Agreed to Be a Surrogate for Her Cousin and His Wife – But After a Doctor’s Appointment, She Overheard Them Whisper, ‘Once the Baby Is Born, We’ll Do It, and She’ll Never Find Out’

“A month, maybe,” Ethan said.

“A month?”

The mortgage balance.

“Nat, we’re helping you.”

I reached beside my chair.

“Then explain this.”

I placed a document on the table.

Ethan frowned. “What’s that?”

“An independent property valuation. My apartment is worth three hundred twenty thousand dollars.”

We’re helping you.

Claire stopped smiling. “Where did you get that?”

“From an appraiser.”

“When?” Ethan demanded.

“Before the baby was born.”

He stared at me. “Why would you do that?”

An independent property valuation.

“Because I started asking questions.”

“What questions?”

“Like why you suddenly became so interested in where I’d live.”

Ethan folded his arms. “We were worried about you.”

Those questions were only the beginning. My real plan was still ahead.

Before the baby was born.

“And why Diane thought I’d be moving after the birth.”

“Mom misunderstood something.”

“Did she also misunderstand the conversation I overheard at the clinic?”

Claire went pale. “What conversation?”
