I smiled. “I’ll do my best.”

That evening, Mrs. Parker stayed with the boys while I headed to Richard’s party, carrying my folder.

The house was crowded. Guests balanced drinks beside folding tables where expensive furniture had stood yesterday.

Richard was explaining loudly. “We’re redesigning everything. Vanessa wanted a modern look.”

One guest studied a plastic chair. “Very modern.”

I nearly laughed.

A very expensive presentation.

Richard spotted me. “Well, look who’s here! Looking for another handout?”

“Your wife invited me.”

“Vanessa! Why is she here?”

“Because I asked her,” she replied.

Richard turned to his guests. “This girl wants thousands because Tyler scratched her ancient Toyota.”

Vanessa wanted a modern look.

“A scratch?” I opened my folder. “Your son crashed into my parked car. I have the footage, the repair estimate, and a witness.”

Richard scoffed. “That wreck isn’t worth twenty-four hundred dollars!”

“Maybe not to you. But it’s how I get to work and take care of my brothers. And you’re responsible for the damage.”
