Mark had returned expecting to collect a fortune. Instead, he was about to discover that his old debts hadn’t disappeared either.
I placed another folder beside his plate.
“What’s that?” he demanded.
“Your unpaid child support.”
Dad manipulated everyone!
He stared at the statements. “I thought we were moving forward!”
“We are. Through the proper legal channels.”
“You said you wanted to reconcile!”
“I said we’d discuss it.”
“That’s dishonest!”
Your unpaid child support.
I almost laughed. “You promised our daughter we’d be a family again before speaking to me.”
He turned toward Margaret. “Mom, help me challenge Dad’s will.”
“No.”
“I’m your son!”
“And those girls are my granddaughters.”
We were moving forward.
“You’re choosing them over me?”
“I’m choosing not to help you take what their grandfather left them.”
Mark grabbed his jacket. “You’ve turned everyone against me!”
I opened the front door.
“No, Mark. You walked away from your family. I just made sure you couldn’t walk away with their money, too.”
