“Your sister had no right to involve everyone!”

“I called her because I needed a ride.”

“I told Sandra where you left me.”

“You should’ve called me!”

“I did, Eric. Three times. You declined every call.”

He went quiet.

Then he said, “You could’ve waited until I calmed down.”

“I’ve been waiting for three hours.”

“Do you expect me to apologize in front of everybody?”

“You should’ve called me!”

“I expected you to come back for me, Eric.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he ended the call.

He hadn’t asked whether I’d eaten or whether Sandra was close. He only cared that the family knew.

He’d called because he was embarrassed.

“I expected you to come back for me, Eric.”

Twenty minutes later, Sandra arrived.

She hurried inside and hugged me.

“Are you all right?”

“I’m just glad you’re here.”

She took my hand.

“Come on. Let’s get you home.”
