“I’m going to call him.”
“Ari, you don’t have to get involved.”
“Mom, he left you three hours from Aunt Sandra’s house. I’m already involved.”
I understood why she was upset.
“Ask him whatever you need to,” I said. “But please don’t drive anywhere. Aunt Sandra’s coming.”
“I’m going to call him.”
“I’m staying here. I just want to hear what he says.”

I watched the clock. Eric still hadn’t called.

Three hours after he’d driven away, my phone rang.
Eric had reached Sandra’s house by then. Ariana had already confronted him.
It was him.
“What did you do?!” he screamed.
“I’m staying here. I just want to hear what he says.”
“Ariana just confronted me! Sandra told everyone what happened. Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”
“I told Sandra where you left me.”
“Now our daughter thinks I’m some kind of monster!”
“Did you tell her why you drove away?”
