“What the hell did you DO?!”
I held up my phone.
“I’ll show you.”
His face went a deep, furious red.
I opened the recording and turned the screen toward him.
First, his legs tucked beside the man in the canvas jacket. I moved forward through the recording to the woman’s arrival and played it again: his knee edging outward, her body shifting away.
“Big man,” I said. “Small man.”
I let that hang for a second.
“Funny how you fit when my friends are sitting there.”
“Big man… Small man.”
People laughed again.
Marcus and Dev had been waiting at that station to meet me.
We were heading one stop farther to dinner together; my message had asked them to board this carriage instead of waiting for me on the platform.
The bully’s jaw worked.
Then he turned to them, lowering his voice as though they might settle this among themselves.
