“You’ll see.”
“Ready?”
“Ready,” said the elderly woman, quietly delighted.
They stood, picked up their bags, and moved to the empty seats across the aisle.
The two men lowered themselves into the gap, one on each side of Mr. Big Guy, shoulder to shoulder to shoulder.
His knees snapped together.
“Ready?”
His trousers rustled as he pulled his legs inward.
He gave a small grunt, looking from one broad shoulder to the other.
Across the aisle, someone burst out laughing, then another person joined in. A teenager lowered his earbuds to see what was funny.
Everybody could see it now.
His knees snapped together.
The man who’d needed two full seats suddenly fit in one.
He looked left. He looked right. His face went from pale to pink to a deep, furious red.
Then he turned and saw the women in their new seats, watching him with calm faces.
His eyes found me.
