ITEM 12a. THE GRANDDAUGHTER.
Lauren is forty-four and she is in Prescott, which is six hours.
I have said, when it has come up, that she is not close to him and that she did not come down.
She came down in the November and has been twice since, and she rings him on a Wednesday.
In the January she rang me, which I was not expecting.
She was not unpleasant about any of it. She thanked me for the courtroom.
Then she asked me, in the ordinary way, how long I had thought there was something wrong.
I said since about the summer.
She said: “Right.” Then: “I wish somebody had said. I’d have come.”
She had no way of knowing. That man told her nothing, because he is what he is, and she lives six hours away and he sounded fine on a Wednesday.
Six hours. A telephone call in the April and she would have been there by the Saturday.
