Their relationship grew serious, and in late summer he said he was ready to get a place with her.
“He told me he wanted Noah to feel welcome,” she said. “I was trying to be kind.”
I believed she had tried to make the room comfortable.
But I couldn’t forget that my son had been taken to meet a stranger without my knowledge.
“Did it seem strange that I wasn’t there when you were planning a home for my child?”
Rachel nodded slowly.
“It did. I accepted his explanations because I wanted to believe him.”
Neither of us spoke for a moment.
Then she said, “I’m ending things with him.”
“You don’t owe me an announcement. That’s between you and him.”
“I know. I just want you to know I’m not moving into that house.”
I thanked her for telling me the truth.
We didn’t keep in touch.
I didn’t think either of us needed to pretend we would.
