“He was upset, Linda. But he wasn’t confused.”
Anger rose inside me.
“My son died yesterday. If you’ve come here to blame him…”
“Please. I know how this sounds. But let me explain.”
She opened her handbag and took out her phone.
“I kept these messages because I thought someday someone might need to see them.”
She showed me a message dated the morning of their wedding.
“I know what you’re planning. Don’t drag my mother into this. You’ll regret it.”
Daniel’s name appeared above it.
“What were you planning?” I asked.
“To leave him.”
“Then why marry him?”
“Because I kept believing he’d change. Even that morning, I wanted to believe we could fix things.”
Sophie explained that Daniel had become increasingly possessive during their final year together.
He questioned her whereabouts, criticized certain friends, and became upset whenever she made plans without him.
Eventually, he started checking her messages.
