I thought about Daniel’s final two years.
How he’d stopped visiting. How he’d avoided my calls. How furious he’d become whenever I mentioned Sophie.
I’d believed he was mourning his marriage.
Now I wondered whether he’d been avoiding me because he feared his lies would unravel.
Greg appeared in the doorway.
He’d been resting upstairs after a sleepless night. He stopped when he saw Sophie and the letters spread across the bed.
“What happened?”
I explained what we’d discovered.
He listened, examined the envelopes, and sat beside me.
“Daniel kept these?”
I nodded.
Greg stared at the letters.
“I don’t know what to say.”
Neither did I.
He looked handsome in his suit, smiling beside Sophie.
I’d always thought it was a beautiful picture.
Now I noticed Sophie’s expression.
She was smiling, but her eyes looked frightened.
I remembered Daniel complaining that Sophie wanted too much independence.
I remembered him answering questions meant for her.
