He looked at Oliver and Lily.
Then he nodded. “A man.”
“What man?”
“The man who came to see Mommy yesterday.”
My heart started pounding.
“Was it someone you knew?”
Noah hesitated. “He had his hood up.”
“Did he talk to you?”
“He asked where Mommy kept the blue folder.”
I felt sick. “Did you show him?”
Noah looked down. “He found it.”
I hurried into the kitchen.
The drawer where Emily kept the folder was open.
The folder was gone.
I looked again at the large footprints, particularly the damaged heel.
There was no question in my mind who had been inside.
What frightened me most was that Noah seemed reluctant to say anything else.
Before I could question him further, my phone buzzed.
Emily. “Mom, I’m coming home early. Don’t tell the kids yet.”
I stared at the message.
I knew Emily didn’t want the children hearing about what was going on, but I needed to warn her.
