“That’s her?”
Mom nodded.
I called the number back. The woman answered immediately.
“Sarah?”
My name sounded strange in her voice.
“Are you Claire?”
“Yes. I’m sorry about the call. I thought your mother had told you. When she wouldn’t answer me this morning, I panicked.”
“Why send the blankets?”
She hesitated. “When Mom and I met, I showed her the blanket I was sent home with. She recognized it right away. She told me about the one she’d made for you.”
Mom lowered her head at the word Mom.
Claire continued, “When she said Emily was expecting twins, I told her I could make two new blankets, one for each girl. I wanted to give them something that belonged to our story, but only after you knew about me.”
“Then why send them here?”
“Your mother said she’d tell you before the babies arrived. I saw Emily’s announcement last night. I called her, and she said she’d told you. She gave me your address months ago, so I arranged a delivery for this morning.”
