“Welcome me?” I asked.
“Jake stood by you when other people had concerns. Do you know how many mothers would have begged their sons to reconsider?”
“Reconsider what?”
She looked at him.
He said, “Mom, this isn’t helping.”
But she was already talking.
“The way you dressed. The parties. The hair. I was worried you weren’t serious about building a future.”
“Yet you supported the wedding,” I said.
“I was the one who convinced everyone it could work.”
Jake shook his head.
“Mom, please.”
She turned on him.
“Don’t act like I made that decision alone. You explained everything to us.”
“What did he explain?” I asked.
Jake said nothing.
His mother looked offended.
“That you two would have a secure future. We weren’t unreasonable people, Stella.”
Jake’s expression changed.
“Don’t bring her finances into this.”
His mother stared at him.
“Why not? You were perfectly happy discussing them before.”
