“Sheila, your husband has set you up. You need to come home immediately, and whatever you do, don’t board that plane.”
Before I could ask for an explanation, she sent me a photograph from our bedroom. It showed Dereck’s passport lying inside his bedside drawer, beside a printed receipt marked PAID IN FULL.
The document listed a collection appointment for Friday at eleven o’clock that morning. Beneath the date was an inventory of woodworking equipment, cabinets, power tools, and several large workbenches.
Then I noticed the storage unit number printed near the bottom of the receipt. It was B-17, the unit I’d rented three years earlier after my father passed away.
My father had worked as a carpenter for most of his life, building cabinets, repairing furniture, and helping neighbors who couldn’t afford professional repairs. Some of my happiest childhood memories came from sitting beside him in his workshop, watching him transform ordinary pieces of wood into something beautiful.
