Mom began examining the smaller boxes while I arranged Dad’s measuring squares and carpenter’s pencils. We found his battered toolbox with his initials scratched into the lid, along with several wooden organizers he’d built to keep screws, nails, and other small items neatly separated.
“Your father never liked throwing anything away if he thought it might be useful someday,” Mom said with a smile.
I laughed because I remembered how he used to save odd pieces of timber for future projects. Whenever I questioned why he needed so many scraps, he’d explain that even the smallest piece of wood could become something valuable with enough imagination and patience.
As we continued sorting through the cabinets, Mom discovered an old photograph tucked behind a stack of wooden panels. It showed Dad standing in his workshop, laughing at something outside the camera’s view.
“Look at him, Mom. I haven’t seen this picture in years.”
