Twenty minutes later, Dereck arrived at the facility, looking furious when he saw us standing beside the open unit. He immediately demanded to know why I’d contacted the manager and interfered with the buyer’s arrangements.
“Sheila, do you realize what you’ve done? That man already paid for the equipment, and now you’re refusing to let him collect it!”
“Then you’ll have to return his money, Dereck. You sold something that never belonged to you.”
He rubbed his forehead and insisted that the situation wasn’t so simple. When I asked why, he began complaining about the monthly storage expenses and the fact that I hadn’t used the equipment since my father’s death.
“We’ve been paying to store these things for three years. You never use them, and we could put that money toward something we actually need.”I reminded him that the decision belonged to me, regardless of how often I visited the storage unit. He then revealed that he’d intended to use the proceeds from the sale to finance renovations to our kitchen.
