I tilted my head.
“That would be inappropriate, wouldn’t it?”
Her eyes narrowed.
Glenn coughed into his fist.
Behind us, Sebastian the magician pulled three silk scarves from his sleeve and accidentally dropped a pack of gum.
Glenn coughed into his fist.
Marie looked around at the relatives.
“Who invited everyone?”
“Glenn.”
Her head snapped toward him.
He waved. “You said family should share, sister.”
“Who’s paying for this?”
There it was.
The question she had avoided while using our house.
“Who invited everyone?”
I handed her the blue folder.
Inside, the first section contained every repair estimate.
The total was large enough to remove the color from her face.
The second section contained the party invoices.
Marie flipped through them.
“Pool cleaning?”
“Yes.”
“Two chairs?”
“You broke two chairs.”
“Pool cleaning?”
“The children did.”
“Children you invited.”
She reached the landscaping estimate.
“Why am I paying for lavender?”
“Because your guests served it nachos.”
