The child who had once been called “not his father’s son” was now healthy, growing, and surrounded by people who had chosen not to abandon him.
News eventually reached his biological father.
Curious, he came to see the child.
He stood outside the neighbor’s home and stared at the little boy playing nearby.
Then he quietly said,
“I want my son back.”
The neighbor’s expression changed immediately.
She stepped between him and the child.
“Your son?”
The man lowered his eyes.
She continued,
“When he needed you, you said he was not yours. When he was crying alone, you were not there. When he needed surgery, you did not pay a single coin.”
The man said nothing.
The neighbor looked toward the boy, who was laughing with the other children.
Then she turned back to his father.
“A child does not become yours only after his problems are fixed.”
