In Canada, each household throws away an average of about 79 kilograms of food per year, which is higher than the average in the United States (59 kg) and similar to that of the United Kingdom (77 kg). Collectively, Canadians produce more than 50 million tonnes of food waste each year, much of which could be avoided. Almost half of this waste is generated at the household level, highlighting the potential for significant reduction through more conscious consumption and better food management. For food safety reasons, legislation requires that all packaged foods display one of two dates. However, the distinction between the two is not always clear to consumers.
