Of course, keeping a home reasonably clean and safe matters. Food waste, mold, pests, blocked walkways and other genuine hazards should not be ignored. But ordinary clutter—laundry waiting to be folded, toys on the floor, books on a table or dishes waiting for the dishwasher—is not a moral failure.
So, what do you call a woman whose house looks like this?
You might call her tired.
You might call her overwhelmed.
You might call her busy.
You might call her a mother.
You might call her human.
But before calling her lazy, remember that you may be looking at only one moment of her life.
The house can be cleaned.
The laundry can be folded.
The toys can be picked up.
The dishes can be washed.
But kindness is harder to replace.
Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do when you see a messy home isn’t to criticize the woman who lives there.
