Dr. Hale lowered her voice.
“It appears the triplets are yours after all—but not because of Vanessa’s donor treatment.”
She turned the page over.
“The embryo transfer records show something else. The clinic did not use an anonymous donor’s sperm. It used a sample labeled under Julian Whitmore’s name.”
Julian stared at the report.
Vanessa rose unsteadily.
“But he never gave them permission.”
“No,” Dr. Hale said. “The sample was taken from the corporate screening file.”
I looked at Charles.
His face had gone gray.
The room fell silent except for the fountain behind us.
Then Dr. Hale added, “And according to the date on the accession record, the sample was authorized by someone who had access to the Whitmore family’s private medical accounts.”
No one moved.
On the final line of the report was the name of the person who had signed the authorization.
Charles Whitmore.
