The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Three Heirs14-008 – Foodie

Charles looked at her.

“Daniel’s wife.”

“You said he refused all contact.”

“He did.”

“Then why was he undergoing fertility treatment?”

“I don’t know.”

Julian’s voice was quiet. “You don’t know anything about your own son.”

Charles flinched, and for a moment I saw the man beneath the billionaire reputation—the father who had convinced himself that money could replace presence, and that silence could prevent old failures from becoming new ones.

The attorney continued. “The clinic’s records show that Daniel and Claire were receiving treatment eighteen months ago. Several embryos were created. The sample used in Vanessa’s transfer appears to have come from that batch.”

“Then the boys may be genetically Daniel and Claire’s,” I said.

“Possibly,” he replied. “But because the embryos were implanted in Vanessa, the genetic mother could be Claire.”

Margaret stood.

“Then Vanessa may not be their mother.”

“Not genetically,” the attorney said. “She would still be their legal mother unless the records establish a different arrangement.”

Julian’s expression tightened.

“What arrangement?”

The attorney looked down at the papers.

“The clinic’s internal review states that one embryo transfer was scheduled for Claire Whitmore. Another was scheduled for Vanessa Blake. The records show both procedures occurred on the same morning.”

“Are you saying the embryos were switched?” I asked.

“That is the leading possibility.”

The thought settled over us.

Somewhere between one patient’s room and another, a laboratory mistake might have transformed three families.

Vanessa may have believed she was carrying children created from her own eggs and an anonymous donor’s sperm. Claire may have believed her embryos were still frozen or had failed to implant. Daniel may have spent the past two years believing he and Claire had lost their chance to become parents.

And the three boys, innocent of all of it, had grown up being called Julian’s heirs.

“What happened to Claire?” Margaret asked.

The attorney checked the file.

“The clinic sent her a notice six months ago regarding an irregularity in the storage records. She responded through counsel but declined further communication.”

“Why?” Julian asked.

“They may have been in the middle of a divorce.”

Charles pressed a hand against the back of a chair.

“Daniel and Claire divorced?”

“According to the file, yes.”

Julian looked at his father.

“You knew none of this?”

Charles said nothing.

The children’s laughter drifted in from the sitting room. Noah had knocked over the block tower, and Ethan was clapping as if the collapse had been intentional. Julian turned toward the sound.
