That night, my mother-in-law hid a rattlesnake under my pillow after discovering my $25 million life insurance policy. She smiled at me and said, “Go get some rest, I made your bed.” I didn’t argue. I took a blanket and gave the bedroom to my husband. Hours later, her desperate scream woke up the entire house… but the real secret was only beginning to come out.

“Then the investigation will show that.”

Kristina stared at him.

Then at me.

Her eyes changed.

Hatred.

Pure.

She picked up her handbag.

As she passed me, she whispered.

“This is not over.”

The officer heard.

He turned immediately.

“What did you say?”

Kristina froze.

“Nothing.”

The officer wrote something down.

She left.

I did not sleep.

Neither did Edgar.

We sat in the kitchen at two in the morning.

The house was silent.

The snake was gone.

The police were gone.

But the real danger remained.

I looked at my husband.

“Who is Heather Perkinson?”

Edgar’s face changed.

Barely.

But enough.

My heart stopped.

“You know her.”

He looked down.

“Nora.”

“Who is she?”

He rubbed his face.

“Please.”

“No.”

“Who is Heather?”

He closed his eyes.

Then whispered.

“She works at the clinic.”

“What clinic?”

“The fertility clinic.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Where we did treatment.”

I stared.

“Why would your mother know her?”

He said nothing.

The silence answered.

I stood.

“Edgar.”

“I need you to sit down.”

“No.”
