I knelt beside the window seat.
The panel looked exactly as I remembered.
I pressed the left corner.
Nothing.
Then the right.
A tiny click.
Brandon crouched beside me.
“You’ve got to be kidding.”
The panel opened.
Inside was a narrow compartment.
And inside that—
a blue folder.
Nobody spoke.
I lifted it carefully.
There was no dust.
Grandpa had placed it there recently.
Across the front, in his handwriting, were three words.
FOR LAURA ONLY.
Evelyn moved toward the door.
“I’ll give you privacy.”
“Stay,” I said.
She stopped.
I surprised myself.
But Grandpa had chosen secrecy for a reason.
I could choose differently.
I sat behind his desk.
Brandon took the chair across from me.
Evelyn remained near the window.
I opened the folder.
The first page was not a will.
It was a letter.
Laura,
If you are reading this, then I have failed to say several things while alive, which is unfortunately consistent with my character.
I laughed once.
A broken little sound.
Brandon looked away.
I continued.
I will begin with the most important.
You were right to leave.
My eyes stopped moving.
