Ten years after my father disowned me for URM becoming a combat doctor, I returned for my grandfather’s funeral—and Dad immediately mocked me for “putting Band-Aids on soldiers.”

Small victory.

Not over him.

With him.

Maybe that distinction was the entire point.

The foundation board met three weeks later.

I attended by secure video from a military medical center where I had returned to duty.

Dad sat at one end of the conference table.

Brandon at the other.

The board voted unanimously to correct the old record stating that I had voluntarily withdrawn.

My name would be restored to the historical minutes.

Nothing more.

Not yet.

I declined Grandpa’s proposed permanent leadership position.

At least for now.

Instead, I agreed to serve as an independent medical adviser to the fund bearing my name, provided the board changed the name.

Dad objected.

Of course.
