Jessica tore it open.
She pulled out the photograph.
Then Richard’s voice rang out from the entrance.
“Jessica. Wait.”
He approached the head table.
“Dad, did you see what Daniel’s mother did? She ruined our wedding!”
Richard looked at her.
“Yesterday, you told me Danielle didn’t want to attend.”
Jessica glanced at Daniel.
“She didn’t.”
Richard turned to the groom.
“Daniel, did your mother choose to stay home?”
Daniel stared at the trophy.
“No.”
“Then why isn’t she here?”
“Jessica didn’t want her to come. I asked Mom to stay away.”
Nearby guests fell silent.
Jessica held up the photograph.
“What does this have to do with anything?”
Richard pointed to the woman standing beside him.
“Do you know why Danielle and I took that picture?”
Jessica frowned.
“Because she cleaned your office?”
“Because she helped me when I couldn’t pay my employees.”
The woman Jessica considered beneath her had once helped her father when he had almost nothing.
