I did not envy Brittany.
I felt sorry for the idea she seemed to have of herself.
Still, feeling sorry for someone does not mean allowing them to mistreat you.
And then lunch arrived.
The Moment She Crossed the Line
The flight attendant, whose name badge read KELLY, began distributing meal trays.
I was looking forward to eating. I had skipped lunch at the airport, and the warm meal smelled surprisingly good.
Brittany lifted her tray, angled her phone toward it, and began filming another video.
“Look at this, guys. Airplane food review!”
She turned her head to get a better angle.
Her hair swept backward.
The ends landed directly in my rice.
For a moment, I simply stared at the tray.
Then I took a breath.
“Excuse me. Your hair is in my food.”
Brittany did not turn around.
“Then don’t eat it.”
I waited, certain I had misunderstood her.
