PART 2 — THE THING INSIDE THE MATTRESS WASN’T WHAT…

PART 2 — THE THING INSIDE THE MATTRESS WASN’T WHAT I FEARED… IT WAS WORSE

I don’t remember falling to the floor.

One second, I was standing there with the plastic bag in my hands, my fingers frozen around the edges, and the next second I was sitting on the bedroom carpet, unable to breathe.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that makes you feel like the walls are watching you.

For years, I had shared that bed with Miguel.

Eight years.

Eight years of waking up beside him, trusting him, believing that whatever problems we had, whatever arguments we went through, we were still a team.

And now I was sitting on the floor beside that same bed, holding something he had hidden from me.

Something he had buried inches away from where I slept.

My hands shook as I stared at the bag.

I wanted to throw it away.

I wanted to call the police.

I wanted to pretend I had never opened the mattress.

But something inside me knew I couldn’t look away.

Not anymore.

Because the worst part wasn’t just what he had hidden.

The worst part was realizing how long he had been hiding it.

I slowly pulled the bag closer.

The plastic was old and brittle, covered in moisture stains. Whoever had placed it there had wrapped it tightly, almost obsessively, like they were terrified something inside would be discovered.

My heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear my own thoughts.

I grabbed a pair of gloves from the kitchen, returned to the bedroom, and carefully opened the outer layer.

Inside was another bag.

Then another.

Three layers of plastic.

Three layers between me and whatever truth Miguel had buried.

My stomach twisted.

Nobody hides something that carefully unless they’re afraid of what happens when someone finds it.

Finally, I opened the last layer.

And I froze.

Because it wasn’t what I expected.

There were no remains.

No evidence of the nightmare my mind had created.

Instead, there was a small collection of items wrapped in an old towel.

A wallet.

A phone.

Several envelopes.

And a photograph.
