“Are you all right?” he asked.
I stared at him.
“You sold me on Thursday, watched me marry a stranger today, and waited until after the cake to ask whether I’m all right.”
“I did not sell you.”
“What would you call it?”
“A bargain.”
“That is worse.”
He sank into a chair.
For a moment, he looked as tired as he had in his office.
“I need you to listen.”
“I have listened to everyone except myself for three days.”
“There are things I could not explain before the wedding.”
“Then explain them now.”
He looked toward the door.
“Not here.”
Anger rose so quickly it made my hands cold.
“Do not say that to me. Niko said the same thing.”
His face changed at the sound of the name.
“What has he told you?”
“Almost nothing.”
“Good.”
“Good?”
Arthur stood.
“You must be careful what you ask him.”
