George and I had been married for forty-eight years.

In all those years, we had argued, gone to bed angry, disagreed about money, our children, even what temperature the house should be.

But I had never once been afraid of him.

Not until that morning.

I woke up around seven and immediately noticed a dull pain in my right shoulder.

At first, I thought I had slept in an awkward position.

Then I changed clothes.

The moment I looked into the mirror, I froze.

A large dark bruise

covered the upper part of my arm and shoulder.

It wasn’t a tiny mark.

It looked as though someone had grabbed me hard.

I stared at it for several seconds, trying to remember the night before.

Nothing.

I hadn’t fallen. I hadn’t bumped into anything. I had gone to bed beside George around ten-thirty, read for twenty minutes,

and fallen asleep. That was all I remembered. I walked into the kitchen. George was standing at the counter making coffee.

“George.”

He turned. I pulled my sleeve aside.

“Where did this come from?”

The moment he saw the bruise, his face changed. It was only for a second. But after forty-eight years, one second is enough.

He knew something.

“I don’t know,” he said.

Too quickly.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

He turned back toward the coffee.

“Maybe you hit something in your sleep.”

“There’s nothing beside the bed.”

He picked up

his cup. And then I noticed something even stranger.

He wouldn’t look at me. All morning, he avoided my eyes.

Every time I entered the room, he suddenly became interested in the newspaper, the television, the window.

By noon, I was more disturbed by his behavior than by the bruise itself.

That was when our daughter Sarah came over. I hadn’t planned to tell her. But when I reached for something in the kitchen,

my sleeve moved. She saw it.

“Mom, what happened to your arm?”

“I don’t know.”
