“For Mommy. This is your childhood boat.”
I burst into tears.
Dad looked at me.
“I knew you’d be angry if you saw that I’d turned the bathroom into a workshop. You always tell me I can’t sit still and that I’m constantly building something.”
He tried to smile.
“I wanted to recreate everything your mother and I used to make for you before your birthday.”
I threw my arms around him.
But then I stepped back slightly.
“Dad, why did you tell Emily to keep it a secret from me?”
His expression became serious.
“I made a mistake, sweetheart. I thought it was just a birthday surprise. I didn’t realize those words could frighten you.”
I squeezed his hand.
“Please, never ask her to keep that kind of secret again. She needs to know she can tell me absolutely anything.”
Dad nodded.
“I promise.”
