I hugged him.
“Just promise me one thing. No more secrets like this.”
He kissed my forehead.
“I promise.”
The next morning, my mother suggested taking a new family photograph.
We stood in the garden, in the exact same place where my father and I had taken our graduation picture the day before.
Except this time, there were four people in the photograph.
My father.
My mother.
Me.
And my newly discovered twin sister.
And when the photographer said, “Smile,” my father looked at us and said,
“Yesterday, I thought I was witnessing the happiest day of my daughter’s life. But today, I’ve realized that the happiest day of my own life is right now.”
My mother held his hand.
And I looked at Sophia.
For eighteen years, we had lived apart without even knowing the other existed.
But from that day forward, everything changed.
Sometimes, behind the most terrifying secret lies not a tragedy, but a miracle that an entire family has been waiting eighteen long years to experience.
