I hugged her, wishing I could erase the last five minutes.
We visited three more houses before going home. Lily tried to enjoy herself, but her excitement had faded.
After I tucked her into bed, she asked whether we could wear our matching princess crowns again next year.
“Of course,” I promised.
Then I kissed her forehead and turned off the light.
Around 10:00 p.m., something gold caught my attention through the living room window.
A shoebox sat in the middle of our porch.
I hadn’t heard anyone approach.
There was no delivery label, only Lily’s name written across the lid in thick black letters.
Inside were a pair of tiny pink shoes, a folded photograph, and a handwritten note.
The photograph showed a little girl in a princess costume almost identical to Lily’s.
She wore a silver crown and the same kind of pink shoes lying inside the box.
