Neighbor Denied Girl with Down Syndrome Halloween Candy – Then Her Mom Found a Gold Shoebox on Their Porch and Called the Police

“What happened to Anna?”

“She grew up and moved away. I heard she was doing well. Mara and I exchanged cards for years, but we lost touch before she died.”

I thought about Mr. Harrison watching my mother visit Lily, silently building his resentment.

All those years, he’d been blaming the woman who had defended his daughter.

But even that wasn’t what upset me most.

He’d wanted Lily to suffer.

The next morning, Lily came downstairs wearing her princess crown over her pajamas.

“Are we going somewhere?” she asked when she saw my coat.

“Just across the street, sweetheart. Grandma will stay with you.”

She glanced toward Mr. Harrison’s house.

“Is that man still mad?”

I knelt beside her.

“He was wrong to speak to you that way. I’m going to make sure he understands.”

Lily considered that.

“Can you tell him I liked his pumpkins?”

I smiled sadly.

“I can.”
