She did not look at the invitation in my hand.

I tossed it back onto the counter, where it landed near the fruit bowl.

An hour later, I went upstairs.

The house was dark, save for the hallway light.

I walked into Leo’s room and saw him sleeping, his blue blanket pulled up to his chin.

Anna was not there.

I went into our bedroom.

She was already under the covers, lying on her side of the bed, her back to my pillow.

The bedside lamp was off.

Only the pale moonlight from the window lit the room.

I undressed in the dark, my keys jingling slightly as I set them on the dresser.

I climbed into bed, the sheets felt cold against my legs.

“Anna?” I whispered.

She did not move, but her breathing was too shallow for sleep.

“Goodnight,” I said.

She did not answer.

I lay there, staring at the ceiling, waiting for her to turn around.

Usually, she would rest her head on my chest, or at least touch my shoulder.
