When Jack became ill, Theo never left his side. He visited after school, watched movies with him, and stayed through exhausting treatments and difficult days. Sometimes he spent more time with Jack than we did.
So seeing him in a red dress at the funeral was the last thing I expected.
As whispers spread through the chapel, I wondered whether something had happened between the boys. Daniel even started to stand, but I asked him to wait.
Then Theo began his speech.
“About six months ago, Jack and I were watching a terrible movie. He insisted it was a masterpiece. It definitely wasn’t.”
A few mourners laughed.
“After another medical appointment, Jack asked if I’d speak at his funeral. I told him to stop talking like that. Then I joked, ‘I’ll give a speech at your funeral if you promise to show up at mine wearing a dress.’”
