I raised the phone.
“These are your words.”
“I was angry.”
“For six years?”
He frowned.
“I never expected it to go that far.”
Something inside me broke.
“No.”
Grant blinked.
“No?”
“You do not get to rewrite this.”
I took a breath.
“Every birthday, I cried for him.”
Grant looked away.
“Every Christmas, I wrapped presents he never opened.”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
“I searched every crowd because I thought maybe one day I would see him.”
Grant said nothing.
“You watched me suffer.”
Silence.
“You watched me blame myself.”
Nothing.
“And every time I cried, you told me to let my son go.”
Eli stood silently beside me.
The truth no longer needed his help.
Grant sighed.
“I thought it would eventually get easier.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“For you.”
“I thought after enough time, you would stop dwelling on him.”
“Dwelling?”
My voice rose.
