I stepped up to the locker and quietly pulled the door open.
What I saw made my blood run cold.
There was no possibility that Ben had been mistaken.
He was watching me.
What was inside that locker should have disappeared with Claire two years ago. For a second, I couldn’t process what I was seeing.
My knees nearly gave out.
Inside, there was a thick loop of braided leather.
It was the braided leather bracelet with the little silver charm Ben had made his mom in kindergarten, the one she wore every single day!
The one that should have been at the bottom of a lake!
I couldn’t process what I was seeing.
I became pale, and my hand shook a little as I picked it up.
Underneath it was her wallet! Brown leather, worn soft at the corners, the one I’d given her for our fifth anniversary.
And tucked behind the wallet was a photo, creased and pale from being handled too much, of Claire and Ben grinning at this pool! The pool we were standing in!
