My Neighbor Made My Kids Late for School Three Times by Blocking Our Driveway – The Fourth Time, I Taught Her a Lesson

Paul told me he had already arranged for their driveway to be widened.

Apparently Denise had complained about the angle since they moved in.

It would take a few weeks.

Until then, he had told her she could use the road space legally or park behind him and move her car after he left.

“Will she?”

He smiled without humor.

“She will now.”

He was right.

Denise never blocked us again.

For months, she barely looked at me.

Fine.

I didn’t need friendship.

Then one rainy morning in November, I came outside and found her standing near our hedge.

My stomach tightened automatically.

Her car was parked legally outside her own house.

She held an envelope.

“I wanted to give you this.”

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?”

“Nothing weird.”

“That’s reassuring.”

She almost smiled.

Inside was a printed letter.

From the school.

Not my boys’ school.

A different one.

She said, “I started working there.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“Office administrator.”

I waited.

“The first week, a mother came in crying because her daughter had six late marks.”

My expression changed.

Denise looked embarrassed.

“The bus kept arriving late.”

“Oh.”

“She kept saying it wasn’t her daughter’s fault.”

I said nothing.

“And I heard myself thinking, ‘Then solve it.'”

She looked down.

“Then I remembered your boys.”

That was the closest she had ever come to understanding.

“What happened?”

“The school removed the late marks after they checked the bus records.”

“Good.”

She nodded.

“I should have listened to you the first time.”

“Yes.”

“I was rude.”

“Yes.”

“And petty.”

I considered it.

“Very.”

She gave a tiny laugh.

“I’m sorry.”

This time I believed her.

I didn’t hug her.

We did not become best friends.

But I said, “Thank you.”

The driveway widening happened before Christmas.

It’s huge now.

You could probably land a small plane on it.

Mark says I should bill Paul for inspiring the renovation.

I told him not to push his luck.

People still tease me about getting up at half past five.

Mark calls it “Operation Silver Corsa.”

I tell him that’s ridiculous.

Mostly because I would have chosen a better name.

But I don’t regret it.

Because I had knocked.

Again and again.

She simply didn’t listen until the consequence arrived before breakfast.

Do you think Denise’s past explains her stubborn behavior at all, or was she simply using it to justify ignoring other people’s boundaries?
