“I was in the middle of a project,” he said. “It was a genuinely bad week at work. I know that’s not an excuse. I’m telling you the sequence of things in my head, not telling you the sequence was right.”

“What was more important about the project than your mother in the hospital?”

“Nothing,” he said. “Nothing was more important. I made a bad call. I made a series of bad calls over a long period of time and I kept telling myself I would make up for them later, and later kept moving.”
