“What matter?”
She sighed dramatically.
“You know exactly what I mean. Spencer is furious, and the police are asking questions.”
“They’re investigating what happened.”
“It was a little wine. Nobody was seriously hurt.”
I closed my eyes.
“You watched him throw it at me.”
“He was angry.”
“So was I. I didn’t throw anything at him.”
She fell silent.
Then she changed tactics.
“You’re destroying your marriage over one unfortunate evening.”
“No,” I replied. “That evening showed me what my marriage had become.”
She accused me of being selfish.
She said Spencer had always provided for me.
She reminded me that I had enjoyed expensive vacations and lived in a beautiful home.
I listened until she finished.
Then I asked her a simple question.
“If your daughter-in-law were sitting at that table, and your son threw wine into her face, would you still call it a little thing?”
She didn’t answer.
