My husband put himself in first class and me in row thirty-four on our twenty-fifth anniversary. Four hours into that flight the captain asked for me by name.

And I said, “I know.”

And he said, “I’ve never told anybody where the medical money came from.”

And I said, “Neither have I.”

PART 5 — WHAT I DID WITH THE SHEET

We did the fortnight. All of it. Same hotel, same room, two weeks.

I have been asked by three people why and I do not have a good answer beyond that the flights were paid for and I was not going to spend my twenty-fifth anniversary in an airport.

I did not confront him there. I did not say one word about that sheet for fifteen days.

I had a copy of it. Ilan gave it to me in a folded envelope at the door of the aircraft with a completely straight face, and I put it in my bag between my passport and my reading glasses, and it was there the whole fortnight.

I filed in the June.

Not because of a boarding pass. Nobody leaves a twenty-five-year marriage over a seat.

I filed because of the card.

Because when my solicitor got disclosure there were four years of that card, and the nineteen hundred was not remarkable on it, and there was a great deal on there that was.

That is what the sheet actually did. It did not tell me my husband was unkind; I had twenty-five years of data on that.

It told me there was an account.

Nell is twenty-seven and she was the one who came and got me from the airport in the June and she has not spoken to her father since the August, which was her decision and which I have twice asked her to reconsider.

Ilan Ferris flies long-haul out of Ardmore. We write at Christmas. He has two children.

He has never once offered me a seat again and I would not take one, and both of us understand exactly why.

You haven’t earned in twenty-five years. Be grateful.

Gideon said that at a check-in desk holding my own boarding pass, in front of a queue of about twenty-five people, and a girl of nineteen behind that desk looked at her screen because it was not her job.

He had bought two of those seats five weeks earlier.

He knew that when he said it. He had known it for forty-eight hours.

And the only reason anybody on that aeroplane ever found out is that in 2003 I put four hundred and eleven dollars in an envelope and told a nineteen-year-old it was from a tax thing.
