The children and staff had evacuated quickly, following the emergency procedures theyâd practiced countless times. But in the chaos and confusion, seven-year-old LucĂa had gotten separated from her group. Sheâd gone back to her room to grab her only photograph of her parentsâthe one precious thing she owned in the worldâand by the time she realized her mistake, the hallway was full of smoke.
Sheâd tried to find her way back to the stairs, crawling on her hands and knees the way theyâd been taught, but the smoke was too thick and sheâd gotten disoriented. Sheâd ended up in a far corner of the building, trapped in a room as flames began to eat through the doorframe.âHelp!â sheâd screamed, her voice raw with terror and smoke inhalation. âPlease! Somebody help me!â
Sheâd heard the adults outside shouting that the fire department was on its way, that everyone needed to stay back, that it was too dangerous to go back inside. Sheâd pressed herself against the window, pounding on the glass, knowing she was going to die.
