Boundaries and Broken Pieces
I will not pretend it was easy.
It was not some perfect scene where old wounds disappeared because a child needed help. The truth is, I cried privately for weeks.
I cried in the shower so Lily wouldn’t hear me. I cried in my car outside the pharmacy. I cried one night when Noah found me sitting on the laundry room floor, holding one of Lily’s tiny socks like it had finally become too much.
Helping Claire did not erase what she had done.
And I told her that.
“You can stay for now,” I said one evening after Lily had fallen asleep. “But this is not a free pass. You will look for work. You will apply for assistance. You will help with Lily’s appointments. And you will not bring Daniel’s drama into this house.”
Claire nodded.
For once, she did not argue.
Maybe she was too tired. Maybe life had finally humbled her. Maybe she understood that I was not the same woman she had once betrayed.
