For the first time in months, she slept without listening for footsteps in the hallway.
PART 8 — THE WOMAN WHO NOTICED
Autumn arrived slowly in Door County. Morgan kept her job in Chicago, dividing her time between the city and the cottage while the legal process continued. She hired a local caretaker to help maintain the orchard and spent weekends repairing the porch with a neighbor who had known Clara for forty years.
There were setbacks. Some nights she woke from dreams of blue water spreading across the kitchen counter. Sometimes an unfamiliar car outside the grocery store made her heart race. She spoke with a counselor and learned not to measure recovery by whether fear disappeared completely.
She also learned to accept help.
Priya brought groceries without asking for repayment. Elaine covered an urgent meeting when Morgan had a legal appointment. The neighbor fixed a broken step and accepted only a pie in return. None of them asked her to surrender anything to deserve their kindness.
