“I’m sorry,” Evelyn said as soon as they sat down. “I should have warned you more plainly.”
“You warned me enough to keep me safe,” Morgan answered.
Evelyn laid a folded sketch on the table. It showed a hollow pendant, a threaded cap, and a narrow compartment concealed behind the decorative face. There were measurements and notes, but no chemical formula. The sketch alone couldn’t establish what the pendant contained.
Beside it lay a photocopy of a customer intake sheet. The customer had used the name James Porter.
“That isn’t Julian,” Morgan said.
“Look at the phone number,” Evelyn replied.
It was Julian’s number.
Priya asked permission to photograph the documents for the investigator. Evelyn nodded.
“There was another woman with him,” Evelyn said. “She didn’t come inside. I saw her through the window. They were arguing beside a silver SUV.”
“Could you describe her?”
“Dark hair, maybe forty, expensive coat. I remember because she looked straight at me.”
