That distinction changed everything.
I still believe parents must set boundaries. Emily should not have skipped school, and Mark should not have helped her hide the truth. We had difficult conversations about both things, and those conversations mattered.
But I also learned that punishment alone would never have solved the problem.
If I had focused only on the lie, I might have missed the reason behind it.
If Mark had continued protecting Emily by keeping secrets, she might have remained trapped between her fear of school and her fear of disappointing us.
And if Emily had continued believing that telling the truth would only make everything worse, she might have kept suffering in silence.
None of us handled everything perfectly.
But we learned to do something more important than pretending we had all the answers.
We learned to listen.
That evening, Emily came home and told me she had raised her hand in English for the first time in weeks.
